I think that the intensity of the immigration laws must be more strict I think that the government should not make it any easier for immigrants to get work visas of to get green cards because I think that many immigrants are coming to the country and not benefiting our country in any way I think that it is important that we monitor these people and make sure that once the enter our country that they help un instead of hurting us I think that we could let them into our country on some sort of trial basis and see how they do, if the help us then they can stay but if they are not helping us then the will get the boot. In our growing society we do not have room for people who keep us down. Many times you will hear people say “We are only strong as our weakest link” I think that this is one of those cases.

A supervisor in the Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Service has pleaded guilty to taking more than $600,000 in bribes in exchange for falsifying immigration documents to help Asian immigrants obtain U.S. citizenship.

I think that we need to crack down on the responsibility of border control this guy got 600000 dollars for getting immigrants false documents. This needs tobe dealt with …NOW

During class we talked about the economic policy for our country today as well as Reagan’s economic policy. I found that Reagan’s economic policy was what we called supply side economics this is where he made tax cuts and other adjustments that would directly benefit the wealthy and then it will “Trickle down” to the lower class. On the other hand the bush administrations economic policy is quite similar because Bush has and is making tax cuts witch is very similar to Reagan’s plan.

After President George W. Bush sent Congress an outline of his tax reform plan on February 8, some critics immediately began to attack it as a return to what they portray as the fiscally irresponsible policies of the Reagan Administration.

With both of these presidents they have been in the upper class so that the tax cuts and the other policies that they implement benefited themselves. In other words they are being smart because they may have been using their powers improperly but they were benefiting someone including themselves. Many presidents had meda decisions that have not benefited anyone so I think that this is a step up also I think that today GWB has had more going on during his presidency then Reagan had going on also I think that FDR’s plan of demand side economics worked much better then the economic plans of both Reagan and Bush.

Current event

In the us the drinking age is 21. This is a problem. We have the highest drinking age in the world, the majority of other countries are 18 or below. Only 3 countries besides the
US have the drinking age above 18 but we are the only one with the age of 21.

http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/LegalDrinkingAge.html

I think that the reason so many younger people have problems with drinking too much and things along that line is because it is something that is forbidden and that makes kids want to do it even more. Having the drinking age at 21 does not stop kids from drinking it just makes it harder, and illegal. By lowering the age of drinking it will make it less desirable for younger people. There are even doctors who think that the drinking age should be lowered http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/YouthIssues/1053520190.html

One doctor said

I’d be glad to. I propose that the drinking age be lowered to about 18 or 19 and permit those of legal age to consume in socially controlled environment such as restaurants and official school and university functions. Currently, we prohibit 20-year-olds from sipping champagne at their own weddings! I also propose that individuals of any age be permitted to consume alcohol under the direct supervision of their parents in their own homes.

By showing this you can tell that this is not just a matter of young adults wanting to get drunk but a matter of making thing right and returning them to how the used to be.

IRAQ

December 15th, 2006

recently we have been talking about the war in iraq and how we should deal with what is going on there. i think that the right decision is both to put mass amounts of troups in iraq as welll as increase diplomacy. although many people would dislike this decision of increasing the #’s of troups, i think that it would be most effective because like u said in desert storm it proved to be effictive. i think that as well as increasing troups we should also increase the diplomacy becsues if we do both one of them is bound to work or maby even both od them will work

hugh war what is it good for

November 28th, 2006

There are many similarities between the war on Iraq and Vietnam. Such as the reason we are and were said to be fighting them. In the Vietnam War we were fighting to try and help stop the spread of communism and in this war we were said to be stopping terror. But who can really stop something that people have their mind set on with out killing all of them…no one. Today we see many people fighting for one cause terror and we are trying to stop them even though it does not directly effect us we should not be fighting someone else’s war. On the contrary to what I have said so far…everyone knows that the real reason that we are fighting this war, is for oil and that is why I am all for this war. Now I am approaching the time that I get my license and I would like nothing more then very low gas prices. Although the fighting is morally wrong everyone knows that we will do it anyways.

TV

October 16th, 2006

Today you turn on the TV and you see a wide range of people. Asian people black people white people and all other types of people. When we watched Ozzie and Harriet we did not see black people or Asian people all we saw were moderately wealthy white people. the reason that we did not see these people back then was because back the people with enough money to afford TV’s were not black and it did not appeal to the white audience to have these people on TV. Now people turn on their TV and see all types of people. Although you do not see an equal amount of blacks and whites you still see more then you did back then. Now black people have their own TV channel BET Black Entertainment Television.

Black Entertainment Television is an American cable network targeted toward African-American audiences in the United States

Yet white people do not have their own TV channel because we are still the majority. When we look at TV today we realize that there is not even close to as much segregation as their was in the time of Ozzie and Harriet but it is still present

T V

October 16th, 2006

Recently I have been thinking about how women are portrayed on TV today compared to back in the time of Ozzie and Harriet. then Ozzie and Harriet were on TV they gave the women the role of cooking and cleaning for example when they go into the house the husband Ozzie talks about how big the kitchen is and he says come look Harriet take a look at this kitchen implying that she will be interested because that is where she spends most of her time. Today on TV women are not confined by their roles of back then. Today women on TV have jobs and many other responsibilities that were generally given to men in the times of Ozzie and Harriet

The show’s sober, gentle humor captured a large, sustaining audience

This type of humor was the least objectionable programming of thee time but today the humor hat we have on TV is very different in involves humor about sex drugs and such these things would never have been able to be aired back then and even today new companies are pushing the envelope on what is acceptable in our society.

Wealth Gap Today

October 4th, 2006

Today there is a big wealth gap between whites and blacks today you go to the poorer parts of the town’s cities and countries and you will most likely see primarily black families. You can see the difference of wealth when you take a poor black city and see that they have an average income of “$27,133″ and then you take a white rich city town like
Greenwich and see the median family’s income is “$140,803″. As Dalton Conley says

“If I could cite one statistic that inspired this book, it would be the following: in 1994, the median white family held assets worth more then 7 times those of the median nonwhite family.”

As you can see from the amounts that I found that is a true fact also the amounts that I got include the whites in New Orleans (although there are few) and the African Americans in
Greenwich. As I read more about the wealth gap between Greenwich and New Orleans (pretty much blacks and whites) our median house price was $1,129,000 when the median house price in New Orleans $128,000. As you can see the difference is huge…over 1 million dollars difference. Numbers like this are what cause redlining

POP CULTURE

October 3rd, 2006

The more diverse programming of today is much more interesting then the programming of the 1950’s. Today we have a wide range of shows form shows with moms who sell weed to sitcoms that just talk about funny things that happen at an office. The programming of the 1950’s is much too conservative for our taste today. When we were watching Ozzie and Harriet in class no one was laughing when they made “jokes”. I think that in the 1950’s television strictly adhered to the guidelines of what programming should have been like today TV has some very risqué content one of the channels with some of the most risqué content is FOX

“The great thing about telling somebody that they’re dieing is it tends to focus their priorities. You find out what matters to them. What they’re willing to die for. What they’re willing to lie for.”

this is a quote form a show on the fox network. In the 1950’s you would never hear somebody say his on TV because it would cause too much controversy but today quotes like that are said everyday on TV.
